Women CEOs have to overcome stereotypes

There are only 13 female CEOs of all the fortune 500 companies and a new report explains one reason why that might be. The report details some of the problems women still face in as they rise in the ranks in corporate America because of outdated stereotypes about how women are supposed to behave. Catalyst's report explains that women in leadership positions are face stereotypes about how they're supposed to act. They find that they aren't as free to pick their own leadership style as men and are held to different standards than men in their positions.

Women in leadership roles can't catch a break. The report says that when they act the way people expect them to by playing into female stereotypes; they're criticized for not being tough enough. And...

Today I'm pro-choice but tomorrow I'm running for President?

Almost-candidate Fred Thompson is already exhibiting the common Republican presidential candidate trait of flipping and flopping on the abortion issue, this time for pay. To paraphrase singer Cyndi Lauper "money changes everything," even abortion politics.

Thompson says he opposes Roe v. Wade, and during his nearly ten years in the Senate he voted to restrict access to abortion every time the issue came before him. Post-Senate he morphed in to a lobbyist and things changed. According to the NYTimes, Thompson lobbied on behalf of a pro-choice group seeking to overturn a federal ban on abortion counseling. Charging the group $250 per...

More proof of Washington playing politics with women's health

Legal Momentum staff attorney Julie Kay weighs in on the testimony given by former Surgeon General Richard H. Carmona to the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform last week. Carmona testified that federal policies concerning abstinence-only programs, emergency contraception, and abortion are dictated by "preconceived political agendas" which he said "fly in the face of good science."

I'll just end with a quote from Julie Kay's ...

I knew Hermione was a feminist!

But we didn't know that the actress who plays Hermione, Emma Watson, embraces the cause and the word. In Sunday's Parade Magazine, Emma proudly proclaims, "I'm a bit of a feminist". Ok, maybe that's not a proud proclamation. But she kind of says she's maybe sometimes a little sort of feminist. And this almost admission is big Hollywood news. Maybe anything a Harry Potter star says in the weeks leading up to the movie and book releases will make the tabloids - but, I think this particular quote struck a...

Raunchy reality TV? Fine. Safe sex ads? No way!

CBS and FOX networks have decided that they won't run a Trojan ad that promotes condoms in reference to sex, not just vaguely in the context of protecting against HIV. The ad (you can watch it here) features a bar filled with beautiful women and giant pigs. The pigs hit on the women who rebuff their pick up lines until one of the man-pigs goes to the bathroom and buys a condom. He is then transformed into a hot guy who the woman at the bar is now excited to talk to. The name "Trojan" is never mentioned in the ad - the logo just flashes at the end of the ad along with the line, "Evolve. Use a condom every time." Shocking, isn't it? I don't know what makes that worse than "Temptation Island" (FOX) or even the sex-filled "Grey's...
